Hair transplant surgery is a highly effective treatment for hair loss, offering patients a natural looking solution to balding or thinning hair. One of the critical aspects of hair transplant surgery is the design of the crown and the creation of incisions to place the hair grafts. In this blog post, we’ll focus on the design and creation of the crown whorl, a unique pattern of hair growth on the back of the scalp, and the importance of accurate incision creation during hair transplant surgery.

What is a Crown Whorl?

A crown whorl is a circular pattern of hair growth on the back of the scalp. It is a unique feature of each individual’s vertex, and it can have a significant impact on the overall appearance of the hair after a transplant. The crown whorl is usually located at the crown of the head, and it is where the hair growth changes direction, creating a circular pattern. The crown whorl can be clockwise or counter clockwise, and its position can vary from person to person. The crown whorl’s shape and size are also essential considerations in the design of the hairline during a hair transplant procedure.

Crown Whorl Design During Hair Transplant Surgery

Designing the crown whorl during hair transplant surgery requires careful planning and attention to detail. The surgeon must consider the patient’s natural crown whorl position and direction, as well as their overall hair loss pattern, to create a natural-looking crown whorl. The crown whorl’s design will depend on several factors, including the patient’s age, facial features, hair density, and hair loss stage.

To create the crown whorl, the surgeon will first use a surgical pen to draw the pattern on the scalp. They will then create tiny incisions in the scalp to place the hair grafts. The surgeon will typically start with the center of the crown whorl and work outward to the larger areas. They will ensure that each graft is placed at the proper angle and depth to create a natural-looking crown whorl that complements the patient’s facial features.

Importance of Accurate Incision Creation During Hair Transplant Surgery

Accurate incision creation is critical during hair transplant surgery because it determines the grafts’ angle, depth, and placement, which ultimately impacts the final outcome of the transplant. The incisions must be precise and evenly spaced to ensure that the hair grafts are distributed evenly and create a natural-looking hairline.

The surgeon will use specialised tools, such as a micro blade, to create the incisions. The micro blade has a small, sharp tip that allows for precise incision creation, minimising trauma to the scalp and reducing scarring. The depth of the incision is critical because it determines the graft’s placement and whether it will survive after transplantation.

The surgeon will also consider the angle of the incision, which should match the angle of the natural hair growth in the area. This ensures that the transplanted hair grafts will grow in the same direction as the surrounding hair and create a seamless, natural-looking crown. The spacing of the incisions is also crucial because it determines the density of the hair grafts and the overall appearance of the vertex.

Conclusion

Crown whorl design and incision creation are essential aspects of hair transplant surgery. The crown whorl’s design must be carefully planned to create a natural-looking pattern that complements the patient’s facial features, while accurate incision creation ensures that the hair graft placement is precise and evenly distributed, resulting in a natural-looking crown. By taking these factors into consideration, a skilled hair transplant surgeon can create a crown whorl that not only looks natural but also suits the patient’s individual needs and preferences.

If you are considering hair transplant surgery, it’s essential to choose a qualified and experienced surgeon who understands the importance of crown whorl design and incision creation. With the right approach and attention to detail, a hair transplant can be a life-changing procedure that restores your confidence and your hair once again.

A receding hairline is one of the most common reasons for hair transplant surgery. Male Pattern baldness is where the hair continues to recede, forming bald patches around the temples and then disappearing completely over the skull.

Restoring the hairline is possibly the most important aspect of hair restoration. Get it wrong and the hair will look strange and artificial once it grows back. People worry about the appearance of the hairline more than any other aspect of hair transplant surgery and with good reason.

The best hairline design looks natural. To get this right first time your hair transplant surgeon will consider numerous factors in creating the natural hairline design that best suits your appearance.

The hairline design in hair transplant

For the design of the hairline, the surgeon will work with each patient on an individual basis in order the create the best results. Here are some of the factors that your surgeon will consider.

Your surgeon will follow your natural hairline pattern as much as possible. This can be difficult if the hairline has been already lost so they will also consider other characteristics. If you have a photo of yourself taken before hair loss it may be a good idea to bring this with you.

The shape of your face will affect the hairline. This will often depend on issues such as gender and race. The hairline needs to look aesthetically pleasing for each individual and this means that it should work with your face, rather than conforming to strict rules.

The facial muscles are also important. Many hair transplant surgeons request the patient to raise the eyebrows so that the hairline can be positioned 5 to 8 cm naturally above this line.
The structure of the forehead will affect the positioning of the hair line. If you wish to decrease the size of a high forehead you can discuss this with your hair transplant surgeon. You can bring the hairline down but this needs to be done so that your hairline looks natural.

Once the surgeon is satisfied he or she will draw your hairline with a marker pen prior to surgery. You need to be happy with the hairline design so it is important to check this out in the mirror at different and mention any concerns you may have.

Incision creation: Using a specialised tool called a micro blade, the surgeon will create tiny incisions in the scalp in the hairline design. The incisions are made at a precise angle and depth to ensure the natural-looking placement of grafts.

You have the final say in your hairline design

It is important to listen to your hair transplant surgeon. He or she will be experienced in carrying out countless hair transplants and a good surgeon will be able to advise you on the best hairline design for your particular case. If the hair loss is likely to progress, the surgeon may advise you to consider a more mature looking hairling. However, you do have the final say in your hairline design. If you have any concerns, it is always far easier to mention these before the hair transplant takes place rather than staying silent and dealing with it afterwards.

Some people believe that donor hair for hair transplant surgery comes from third party donors . This is not so. Donor harvesting is always carried out by using donor hair extracted your own head and scalp. With hair transplant surgery you are your own donor.

The donor area requires careful management in order to get this right. Your hair surgeon needs to make sure that the donor site is not depleted by over harvesting so that the hair remains full and natural in this area too.

So where are the safe donor areas for harvesting?

The best donor areas for hair transplant surgery have the thickest hair growth and density. Typically these safe donor areas are situated at the back of the head and on the sides of the scalpe e.g the temporal areas. Below the jawline is also a good site for men looking to improve their hair with hair transplant surgery.

If the hair is sparse in these areas your surgeon may look to other areas of your body as your donor site. Body hair can also be used such as from the chest, arms, legs, back, stomach and even the pubic area. However this will depend upon the individual and although body hair can be suitable in some cases, it does not work for everyone.

Hair transplant surgery is mainly carried out using donor hair from the head or beard area.

What happens to the donor area after hair transplant?

Following surgery your donor area may look red and inflamed. You will be left with some pinpoint scarring from the follicle extraction. This will quickly fade within a few days.

Because the surgeon will be careful to spread out the extraction over the donor area, there will not be any resulting hair loss from your donor area. The hair will soon grow back with no noticeable difference following harvesting.

So let’s take a look at some facts about hair

The average head has around 100,000 hair follicles. The beard area has around 30,000 follicles with the greatest concentration on the upper lip and the chin. This means that you have plenty of hair follicles to use as your donor hair.

On average you need between 2500-3000 grafts for half a head of hair (hairline to midscalp). Approximately you need anything between 1000 – 2000 grafts for a receding hair line and about 1500-2000 grafts for the crown.

Managing the donor site

The donor site needs to be carefully managed as over harvesting could lead to visible thinning in the donor area. Howeveras your hair transplant surgery does not require a sizable proportion of your available hair, you are unlikely to notice much difference before and after.

Following surgery you do need to take care of the donor site. It needs to be kept clean and free from infection. However as complications are extremely rare most people do not experience any issues.
